Bugs found and fixed
- Reddit thread finder: also matches the mods' 'Official Disucssion' typo and does a sort=new search; Resident Evil now has its thread (96 comments).
- Rotten Tomatoes: fall back to /m/<slug>_<year> then /m/<slug>, accepted only if the page's release date is within 21 days of the BOM release; Primetime now has 86%/77%.
- Other-sub posts: used for sentiment only if the film's title appears (whole-phrase) in the post title; dropped 3 r/MovieSuggestions posts about The Wicker Man (1973)/folk horror from Wicker.
- Word-boundary title matching everywhere (no more substring hits like 'Verity' in 'severity').
- CinemaScore: grade must appear in a r/boxoffice post title that also names the film; source post recorded.
- Moderator/AMA notices are excluded from sentiment (Whalefall's top 'comment' was an AMA announcement).
- Box office: if the theater count moved more than ±40% vs the same weekday last week, the % change isn't scored (YCSE 855→2655 theaters, Primetime 1451→321).
Verified
- All 14 matched r/movies threads are the right film (date check passes for 14): each thread's own title is “Official Discussion - <film> [SPOILERS]” and it was posted within a day of the BOM release date.
- Every BOM row matches a fresh refetch, and % vs last week recomputes exactly from the chart 7 days earlier.
- RT critics/audience match the live pages, and each page's release date matches the BOM release (right film and year), except You Can See Everything audience: 96 when fetched, 97 now (normal drift).
- The composite recomputes from the signals by hand for every movie (expressions below).
Not verified / known limits
- CinemaScore grades come from r/boxoffice post titles (single-film posts naming the grade). Not cross-checked against cinemascore.com in this run.
- Reddit RSS has no vote counts. “Top” order is Reddit's own, and rank weight stands in for upvotes.
- VADER was replaced (see Sentiment model). The new model is right on 59% of held-out comments, better than VADER but far from perfect. Its main weakness is neutral comments: plot talk that describes a tense or sad scene often gets past the opinion gate and is scored negative. You Can See Everything (Reddit 66 → 47) is the clearest example. Theme sentences still use VADER.
- Second-week films (S&S, Whalefall, Street Fighter) are compared against an opening Friday that included Thursday previews, so their drops look steeper.
- Title matching: a one-word title can still collide with another film named in a post title (e.g. “Wicker” vs “The Wicker Man”). Other-sub posts are now only used when the post title names the film, and they're listed per movie so you can check.
- A Talent for Murder has no r/movies Official Discussion thread (it's covered in a weekend megathread), so its confidence is 0.30.

Sentiment model: VADER → transformer
Labels. All labels were made by the agent (Grok Bot) that built this site, from the comment text alone, without seeing model outputs. They are one annotator's judgment, not an independent or multi-rater gold set. Dev set: 37 comments from the first VADER spot-check (used only to pick thresholds and the model). Held-out set: 112 new comments, 8 random per thread across all 14 threads (seed 2026), labelled before running any model. Distribution: +1 37, 0 60, −1 15.
Selection. Thresholds were picked on the 37 dev comments only (best macro-F1). The model to adopt was picked by dev macro-F1 (siebert+opinion was best on dev: 0.752), then confirmed on the 112 held-out comments, which no threshold or choice was fitted to.

“+opinion” = zero-shot gate: P(opinion) below threshold → neutral. siebert alone is binary; neutral = max prob below threshold.
Significance (held-out, exact McNemar). adopted vs VADER: right where VADER is wrong 32, reverse 9, p = 0.00043. Accuracy gain 95% bootstrap CI [0.098, 0.312]. Against cardiffnlp alone the gain is not significant (p = 0.26493), so either transformer is a clear step up from VADER; siebert+opinion was picked because it was best on dev.

VADER labelled only 11 of the 60 neutral comments neutral and called 11 of the 15 negatives positive. The adopted model gets 12/15 negatives and 25/60 neutrals. Neutral is still its weakest class.

Effect on the ranking
both runs use the identical cached Reddit/RT/BOM responses (MR_OFFLINE=1), so only the sentiment step differs. Mean |Reddit − critics| over 14 films: 21.3 → 19.4. Klara and the Sun: Reddit 67 → 27 vs critics 24, which removes most of that gap. Verity 52 → 16 (critics 31, audience 71) and Street Fighter 49 → 30 (critics 41, audience 78) now come out harsher than critics. consensus redefined as |pos-neg|/(pos+neg) (weighted). The v1 sd-based formula collapses to 0 for near-0/1 model probabilities. Re-running VADER with the new consensus changes no bucket; 'before' columns are v1 scores/buckets, consensus_before is VADER under the new formula.
