It felt cool to see the expression of a culture I wasn't privy to before. I loved the use of mixed animation between the 3D and 2D segments and the reaction emphasis bubbles. It feels like animation techniques are finally catching up with how the internet generations communicate, packing in more information in the frame than we've been given before. I took my 5 and 4 yos to see it and they stayed in their seat the whole time! My daughter normally asks to go to the restroom during scary scenes (like the tornado in Wicked 2) but she was apparently too into this one. My son was glued to his seat and said he was scared of Manang but was brave and watched. I honestly can't believe we didn't go to the bathroom once, we were all hooked! My only criticism is that I think the parallel between Manang and Jo coulda been stronger. It was obvious Jo felt empathy towards her when she was told how Manang became so malicious. I think they could have explored that link just a little more to really emphasize the movie's themes. To me, Manang seemed like she was angry because of something she perceived as lost or stolen from her, and her returning memory brought her closure in a satisfying way. It being represented as a pendant on her heart implies, to me, that she regained the memory of a lost love (a partner, friend, or child perhaps) whose loss she wanted to forget due to the pain of it, and ended up forgetting the person entirely, perhaps even leaving behind a faint enough memory to know she lost something close to her but not quite who or how. I'm really jealous kids are getting movies that take wild swings like this. It feels like we're in a children's animation renaissance that Disney is outside of. I can't wait to see more movies taking swings like this one!
The wickerman is only going to rot since he got lit on fire At least, that's what the basket maker said towards the end of the movie
The movie was surprisingly heartfelt, tackling the deep emotions of feeling unloved, especially in marriage, to discovering new ways to rekindle a dying flame (the baker and his wife doing roleplay and wanting a "third" was very entertaining but also great example of communication). She’s this girl that is growing up, but isn’t as grown as she thinks she is. Where she’s smart enough to see through the Villain’s charade, but rarely I felt like she had some sort of deeper guile. She kinda just runs through the plot at times. Some of the other characters are all great. Alexandra is a compelling villain. Curtis feels like a real kid that is in over his head. Even Awkwafina Rat was fun. I do appreciate how serious it can be at times. There’s some bits of really sudden violence and death, almost never blood though, that really play up the weight of things. And there’s this well-nuanced theme of when violence is necessary, but not glorified. Unless I completely imagined that. This was a cheap way to make her look quirky; we didn't need it. - the dances looked like they were from a parody of this sort of movie. The Favorite or Poor Things. - Mr Palmer appearing to be a teenager kills the whole point of Mr Palmer: he is acerbic, but is fundamentally good. To me this is a film about people being GOOD when they see someone else in distress. Like Brandon gifting a vocation to Edward. Like Elinor protecting Marianne from her sadness. Even Willoughby's distress at Marianne's illness is genuine. Mr. Palmer's grace note is part of that too, and it didn't really work here. I do like the 3 MC actors though.
If you don't want us to compare this Bison to the great Raul Julia's take, then don't have this one quote the "it was Tuesday" line.
I don't know what happened with this film. Either there was a TON of studio interference or they passed the script through AI or something. Everything looks fine from a glance. Most of the actors fit their role well, the costume design is on-point, the fights ranged from eh to pretty good, VFX straddled that balance of being corny and cool, story concept had potential, animated flashbacks were awesome. But the actual scenes are so weird. The editing feels like a mess because there's continuity between scenes, but it doesn't feel like the scenes are working off the same context. The dialogue has a bunch of one-liners that don't say anything or don't actually fit the moment. There's constant tonal whiplash and not in a good way (one moment, Ryu is revealing a devastating secret to Ken and giving up in shame, then next moment he's just beating Ken's ass and making quips at him???) Characters randomly act out-of-character, there's weird jokes shoved in about feet, homoerotic undertones, smell fetish. The backgrounds feel empty even though there's people (or CGI people) there because the sound is muted and doesn't fit their energy. And don't even get me started on how the movie ended. They had all the pieces. They could've done a really basic story structure and this would've felt fine. Wtf derailed it like this?
I don't know if this is the best way to describe it, but the movie had an almost uncanny valley feel to it. The way the characters spoke to each other, the things they said, the quick transitions between locations. I felt like I wasn't watching a real movie at times. I normally dislike when a horror movie goes too hard into lore and dialogue, but this was too far in the other direction.
Wow, that is a crazy ending in the book. No wonder people online were talking about how the movie would tackle it I honestly like grim endings like that and I personally would have preferred it. But I know for sure general audiences would have hated this bleak conclusion.
When they set out all the weapons they had in the house on a table?? You’re just giving it sharp things to kill you with!
A lot of the decisions you just described can likely be explained with them trying to keep some semblance of normalcy for Bela Especially with their little “party” before the final fight when Bela calls them out and says they could stop pretending As for the strangers at the restaurant, I mean what else can you really do? They were all visibly weirded out but I’m not sure exactly what else you expected them to do
Maybe I'm a dunce or something but I found it to be good and actually recommended it to people. I think there's a lack of empathy for the story being told here. There's a marriage that started off on the wrong foot. Unwanted motherhood. An affair. This is all happening while the parents think all of this is going over the child's head. She's perceiving all of this while the adults think she's just not there. I know several relationships where a surprise pregnancy led to fulfilling parenthood but also feelings of not getting to live a free life a little longer. It is also common for families to put on a good show but be completely broken behind the veil. This was a coming of age story. An invitation to the truth. The monster/anxiety in the child was the chasm between her perceptions and the story her parents wanted to make her believe. Once they confessed she was on the other side of the curtain understanding that she was only playing a part. I don't have the direct quote on hand but she said something like "I'm a liar too" when she struck the monster. I personally found that part jarring because the child was very innocent but perceptive. That 180 was more extreme than I'd like and came across as a bit of contrived/rushed character development. Anyway, 8/10 because I liked the story.
This movie is absolutely insane, sometimes in good ways, sometimes in bad ways. It was doing too much and too little at the same time. Chastain gives a killer performance though, bravo. I like that everyone can just see the entity off the bat. Hate how they dealt with that after. I like that the powers were more than just being a mimic. Hated how the powers just seemed limitless though, like what do you mean you can make someone move across the entire state and grow as big as a kraken? I liked that the lore was a symbol of some type of trauma. Hated how it just did whatever it wanted with that. It was fun overall, but it honestly could've been amazing if they just got their shit together. 6/10
The Coraline comparisons are driving me crazy. You can still have tension without using those tropes.
